I am amazed that with all the thought and effort that goes into tennis technology, no one has seriously addressed the shape and functionality of the racquet handle. The tennis industry has continued to ignore the handle and the powerful affect it has on the ability to teach, learn and play the game. Why do you think so many pros have their handle modified? Ever notice how sharp the bevels are when you get a close up on TV? What happened to the grip the racquet came with? Its gone. The great Rod Laver modified his handle so he could get a better grip . Don't you deserve a better grip?
The shape of the handle could be so much better. It lacks a distinctive frame of reference and it could fit so much better in the hand. The Power -V- Grip provides the reference point needed to make the modern grips so much easier to teach, learn and execute. The only grip that the standard handle is truly comfortable with is the Eastern Forehand. Once you stray from the Eastern Forehand there is not a strong frame of reference for finding the other grips. The bevels are too small, especially for the Continental and the Semi-Western. It takes years of practice to learn these grips and get used to making the change from grip to grip. It is such a shame to see good athletes get locked into weak grips and poor wrist positions which limits their potential and enjoyment of the game when you know they could be so much better.
The shape of the handle affects the generation of racquet head speed . The standard shaped handle does not match the natural leverage and power points of the hand needed for todays power grips. Todays game is played with tremendous racquet head speeds and extreme swing paths. The handle must provide superior leverage and traction to accommodate the torque and stresses caused by the whip action that is being used to generate the power in todays strokes. The shape of the handle is no longer just something to hold on to. It must be functional and provide utility for todays power tennis and high tech racquets.
The shape of the handle affects the transfer of energy to the ball. Upon impact with the ball there is a clash of energies. Any twisting in the hand reduces the energy transferred. Once you deviate from the Eastern Forehand, the other grips do not fit in the natural folds of the hand or provide sufficant leverage and traction necessary to effectively transmit a high percentage of energy to the ball. The Power -V- Grip does.
